User Behavior Signals

A stack trace tells you what broke. User behavior tells you why it matters.

When a JavaScript error fires, the technical details are only half the story. Was the user about to purchase? Did they click the same button five times in frustration? Did they come from a paid ad you spent money to acquire? This context transforms error monitoring from a developer chore into a business priority.

User behavior signals fill the gap between "an error occurred" and "this error cost us money."

Why technical errors aren't enough

Traditional error monitoring captures exceptions, stack traces, and browser metadata. This tells you what happened technically but nothing about who was affected or what they were trying to do.

Consider two identical errors:

When a user rapidly clicks the same element three or more times within a second or two, something isn't responding. This is called a rage click — a behavioral signal that indicates frustration.

Dead clicks

A dead click is a click on a non-interactive element. The user expected something to happen, nothing did. Unlike rage clicks, dead clicks are often single clicks — the user tries once, realizes it doesn't work, and moves on.

Understanding what users were doing before and after an error provides critical debugging and prioritization context:

Traffic source — Did they come from organic search, paid ads, or direct? Users from paid traffic cost money to acquire. Errors affecting them have immediate ROI impact.

Page journey — What pages did they visit before the error? Were they browsing casually or moving through a conversion funnel?

Device and browser — Is the error isolated to specific configurations? Mobile Safari errors might indicate touch handling issues.

Time on page — Did the error happen immediately (page load issue) or after interaction (event handler problem)?

Post-error behavior — Did they leave immediately, retry, or work around it? This tells you how severe the problem felt to them.
